Let me tell you about Elena. A hard-working mom in her early twenties, Elena wanted her child to be ready for the “best” schools. When he was 1, she started teaching him letters. He was fussy and didn’t make any progress. Elena wondered, “Is it too early?,” but friends and family were putting the pressure on. She decided to try again and pushed more activities on her kid. He hated it. When her child turned two, he still wasn’t practicing his letters without kicking and screaming.
She worked and he went to school. He was unhappy with the schoolwork. Neighbors and strangers would click their tongues and shake their heads when they heard him argue with her on their way to school each day. She was embarrassed.
Elena wondered, “Is this normal? Why is my child so reluctant to learn? He’ll never be ready for the best schools!”
What went wrong? How DO you set your child up for reading success at such a young age?
If you are also a parent of a young child, you may have similar questions.
Perhaps you’re confused about all the conflicting advice out there, like letting your child play vs. teaching them to be productive. You might wonder, “What is the right age for learning their letters?” or “When should my child be reading?”
You might be asking, “Why do we argue so much, when all I want is the best for my child?”
You’ve had hopes and dreams for your child since they were a baby. Now trying to help them read is a burdensome chore and you just don’t have the energy for it…
THE GOOD NEWS…
There ARE effective approaches to teaching your children to read; methods that work well with young children’s brain development that help prep them for kindergarten. It IS possible to lower your stress, decrease the arguing and allow your child to learn at their own pace. Reading experts have crafted a program which makes sense, is supported by science, and can let your child BE a child AND learn foundational reading skills!
Imagine sitting down with your child to look at books and both of you LOVING it!
Picture playing with them, and also knowing it’s the best use of your time together.
Imagine the peace of mind you would feel having a solid game plan to help teach your child to read and seeing the results from consistently doing it the right way.
How would you feel if you had the answers to your questions about how your child is developing, and where to focus your energy to provide the maximum opportunity for growth?
Wouldn’t it be great to know the right advice to follow because it is based on 100s of children of all different learning styles learning to read successfully??!
Button: [Yes, please! Reserve my spot!]
A well-thought out approach to teaching your child to become kinder-ready can provide you with ALL of the following:
Unequivocal answers to the question, “Which advice should I follow?”
Knowledge of how to direct the energy you do have to get your child to thrive in learning
A stronger connection with your child because the activities you do together are developmentally appropriate and enjoyable for both of you
Understanding why your child is behaving in a certain way, and how you can respond as the parent, and keep your calm
Trust in your own ability to teach and your child’s ability to learn -even if you’re not an expert and even if you work all day
Easy-to-implement teaching tools to build your child’s reading foundation so they will feel confident going to school
You might be thinking “I don’t have time for this. I’m not a teacher- I’ll just leave it up to the teachers.” But don’t doubt yourself- as the parent you actually ARE your child’s best teacher. Many reading programs out there promise too-good-to-be-true results and are not based on science. Even some teachers may leave out important steps or push the wrong skills too early.
You can learn simple strategies to help your child learn to read, no matter their learning profile or previous challenges with schoolwork. You don’t need to be an expert, or be a stay-at-home parent to try this.
Wouldn’t you prefer to feel calm, confident, and hopeful about your child’s learning? Who wouldn’t want a stronger relationship and want their child to love reading and learning?
Using a proven, foundational approach to teaching reading is the best way to produce motivated, well-rounded learners. The Parent Teaches Reading Coaching Course is built on these principles. A combination of positive parenting methods, the stages of reading development and brain science, this program keeps your child progressing on the pathway toward reading independently.
Hear what our students have to say:
“ [The Mom Teaches Reading Program] actually helped me a lot because compared to a lot of kids here…it has helped [my child] so much in her confidence level and even the way that she learns…”
-Diana Liwanag (mother of 2 year ol
“I think the biggest result from taking the course was [my child] being able to name all the letters of the alphabet as well as try to read words on their own. In addition, my youngest was able to understand the story and ask questions. Reading was also a fun activity. I love how there were different approaches on how to read based on the ages of my children. There was also less frustration on my part as a parent because it made me understand how to help my child learn how to read. ”
- Kartini Ladrido (mother to 4, 7 and 12 year old)

Meet Our Reading Experts and Program Creators:
Dr. Victoria Ang-Nolasco and Tasha Reyes-Mendoza are childhood friends who reunited as adults to create the Parent Teaches Reading Coaching Course for moms and dads of children age 6 and under. Their mission is to empower parents to help their children learn to read in the right way, at the right time.
As children, Victoria and Tasha used to stand on chairs to talk to each other over the low wall in between their two houses. Before long, Tasha moved away and they lost touch. A few years ago, these childhood friends bumped into each other at a developmental pediatrics convention and shortly after began creating the Parent Teaches Reading Course.
More about Dr. Victoria:
Dr. Victoria is a pediatrician and a positive parenting coach. She’s a child developmental and behavioral specialist, an expert in brain psychology for kids, and a mother of a young child. She founded the Effective Parenting Academy after seeing many overwhelmed parents come into her clinic with misconceptions about their child’s learning. Frustrated by the lack of good educational programs, she decided to take action and create one.
As a child, Victoria remembers feeling anxious due to pressure about schooling. Now a parent, she understands the challenges parents face about getting your child ready for school. Through the Parent Teaches Reading Program, she strives to answer the question, “How can parents best help their children learn to read confidently and with joy?”
More about teacher Tasha:
Tasha Reyes-Mendoza is a reading intervention specialist with over a decade of experience helping children learn to read. She has taught hundreds of children including students with dyslexia, reading delays, and reading disorders. She has seen first hand the pain caused for parents and kids dealing with literacy problems. She understands the why and the how to approach any student profile with learning to read.
Tasha is the Director of the Center for Reading Assessment and Intervention. She is also a teacher’s teacher. She co-developed a course for teachers about how to teach reading thoroughly and responsibly.
Tasha is a mother to four young children. She left her successful corporate career to help her own child with a communication disability learn to read. She has taught all four of her own children to read and wishes the fulfillment and fun of reading success for all parents and children.
The Parent Teaches Reading Program is a work of love from these two mothers and child learning experts.

See what other students have to say:
“It’s a wonderful investment and I find myself going back to the modules every now and then for a refresher :) I’m very happy to say that my daughter (2 and ½ yo) is growing and developing beautifully - big talker with quite and impressive vocabulary, quick learner, shows empathy, very active and loves sports… but of course, like all toddlers, still with bouts of tantrums but my husband and I are trying to be her “calm” so we can help her regulate her emotions. And oh, thank you for the Tantrum kit that you also made accessible to course takers.” -Kristina Rigor
“My relationship with my children in teaching them how to read is a lot better because there was less pressure and no time limit. It provides opportunities to bond with your child while teaching them an essential skill. ” - Kartini Ladrido (mother to 4, 7 and 12 year old)
You like what you’re reading but still have some questions…
F.A.Q.s:
Q: I would love to help my child learn to read, but what if I just don’t have the time?
You don’t need much time to make a positive difference in your child’s reading foundation. In fact, ten minutes is the maximum number of minutes a day we recommend working on reading with your child, until they are old enough to read independently. In addition, the course itself is self-paced, so you can complete it on your own time.
Q: I don’t know the first thing about teaching. Can I really do this? You don’t need to be a teacher or a reading expert to help your child learn to read. All that is required is that you want to help and can be patient and encouraging! As you work your way through the modules, you will discover that the calm approach to teaching reading transfers to other parenting situations and can help you feel more confident and fulfilled as a parent overall. In other words, you CAN do this, and you WILL see progress in ways you may not even realize!
Q: I don’t feel I’m great at speaking English. Can I still do a good job teaching my child? It is perfectly fine to not feel you’re a great English speaker and yet still be successful at helping your child learn to read in English. This course is for parents of children 6 and under and the goal is to help them achieve a grade 1 reading level. You can learn alongside your child, and if you do make mistakes, you can model how to fix it. This is what we call a teachable moment.
Q: I haven’t started teaching my child anything at all. Is this course too advanced for me? This course matches well with beginners. It will teach the necessary mindsets, all the beginning steps, word building and eventually reading. The course will take you through the steps to help your child get to a grade 1 reading level. This course is unlike any other out there and will be a great fit for you.
Q: Is this course for children or for me? This course is for you, the parent. It will help you as the parent get clarity on best practices for reading instruction for your young child. It will also give you positive parenting methods to avoid unnecessary conflict and frustration.
Q: We have already gone through programs that teach my child the alphabet. Should I skip the early modules? Will this course provide anything new for me? Teaching your child to read involves so much more than just learning letters. This course is head and shoulders above others because it lays the proper groundwork for learning language and loving it. We’ve seen the problems caused by improper reading programs. We recommend learning the foundational skills even if you’ve already gone through the alphabet with your child. You will likely find new information and a stronger understanding and approach to teaching reading.
Q: What time are your coaching calls? It can be a challenge to time the coaching calls conveniently for all of our parents. You don’t need to attend the calls to be successful in this course. Ask yourself, “Does attending live calls matter more than teaching my child to read?” Don’t let the fact that you can’t attend live prevent you from getting your child on track with their learning. You can be very successful teaching your child to read even if you can’t attend the calls. All calls are recorded so you can watch them later. You can also submit questions ahead of time so we can discuss them on the call, even if you can’t make it. You can then watch the replays when you have time.
Q: Can you remind me again of what I get?
With the individual courses, you get life-time access to the deliverables laid out in the table above. With all of the skills courses (note this does not include the foundational course), you also get monthly coaching calls for a year, an online community of parents like yourself who are also teaching their children to read, and an online learning library. The most important thing you will potentially get is a happy, empowered child who loves to learn and grow!
Q: There is a lot of material in this course. Does my child have to learn it all within the time-frame of the course?
Each of the courses is a stage in your child’s reading development. Each child differs in how quickly they move through the stages. At the end of each stage, we’ve included a section about how to know when they are ready to move on. You should not rush your child to learn all of this quickly. That’s why you have life-time access to the course, so you can go at your child’s pace and build a quality approach.
Q: When will I get access to the training?
After you enroll, you'll receive an email with instructions on how to access the course platform. You get immediate access to the modules - and we're updating them too! You get a year of updates with your purchase.
Q: How long will I have access to the course materials?
Once you invest in the course, you will have access to all the materials for as long as you need them. This way you won’t have to rush and you won’t be hurrying your child either. Move with patience, in a way that benefits your child. Use it for your other kids as well, and keep access to all the materials online or print them out and use them at home for as long as you like.
Q: What is your refund policy?
We stand behind this course and have seen these methods work for hundreds of students with a variety of learning challenges. If you try the course out and in the first 14 days decide it’s not right for you, we will refund your money. Simply email us at support@discerningparenting.com within the first two weeks.
Q: What do I do if I have more questions?
Have a question we didn’t answer? Send an email to support@discerningparenting.com and we'll get back to you in 2-3 days.
